Chicago Sagan Day's Safe Space Policy
The Carl Sagan Day organizers are dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of sex (including pregnancy), gender, gender identity, gender presentation, sexual orientation, ability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion or asylum status.
In general, prohibited conduct includes any abusive conduct that has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with another person’s ability to enjoy and participate in the event.
Participants are expected to follow this code of conduct throughout the Carl Sagan Day Event and are entirely responsible for their own behavior.
Harassment Policy
Chicago Sagan Day organizers do not tolerate harassment of or by conference participants, speakers, staff or organizers in any form. Harassment includes offensive verbal comments related to gender, gender identity, gender presentation, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention.
Yes means yes; no means no; and maybe means no. Please take no for an answer for any request or activity. You are encouraged to ask for unequivocal consent for all activities during the event. No touching other people without consent. This includes hands on knees, backs, shoulders—and hugs (ask first if unsure!). There are folks who do not like to be touched and will respect and like you more if you respect their personal space.
We hope that attendees will engage in conversation and discussion throughout and about the event, including with those they have not previously met. We therefore note that critical examination of beliefs, including critical commentary on another person’s views, does not, by itself, constitute hostile conduct or harassment.
Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately. Anyone violating this policy may be warned or expelled from the event at the discretion of the event organizers. When there is a reasonable basis for believing the conduct is illegal, appropriate law enforcement authorities will be notified. If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact an event organizer immediately. Event organizers can be identified by name tags.
Event organizers will be happy to help participants contact DePaul security or local law enforcement, or otherwise assist those experiencing harassment to feel safe for the duration of the event. We value your attendance.
Behavior During Event
Please respect the sessions and the speakers. Turn off cell phones and other electronic devices and take conversations outside the session room. There will be time both before and after the speakers for socializing and conversation.
Families and Children
This conference welcomes families with children and requires that all attendees treat these families with courtesy and respect. Parents or guardians bringing children are responsible for the children’s behavior and are expected to remove disruptive children from the session. Parents or guardians should be aware not all language may be suitable for children and that this event will likely be most fun for children aged 10 and up.
Reserved Seating
There are chairs and spaces in the room that are marked “reserved.” Chairs close to the front are reserved for attendees with vision or hearing impairments as well as the event organizers. Other spaces are reserved for attendees with mobility accommodation needs. Please leave these chairs and spaces free throughout the event for those who may need them.
We look forward to a safe and enjoyable event!
